Year of establishment : 1964

In the year 1964, the department was established and initially offered BSc. (General) course only. Honours course started in the year 1995. Presently, the department has three laboratories with sufficient number of anthropometric instruments, human skeletal materials, primate specimens, prehistoric stone tools and assemblages, equipments for genetic study and an enriched seminar library with internet facilities for staff and students. Class room with ICT facility and interactive sessions with students on regular basis helps as well as strengthen  the academic base of the students. The academic record of the department is always quite impressive right from the beginning. Generally 60% of the honours students secure first class rank every year.

Events

Students have been doing seminars, project works, museum visits as well as fieldwork on regular basis according to their curriculum in different topics encompassing the major three branches of Anthropology:-

   Biological – project work along with seminar presentations on topics like Tobacco use, Thallasaemia awareness, Eating disorders, Health hazards etc.

      Social-Cultural – fieldwork on technology in local communities as well as ethnographic study among the different tribal / caste communities along the length and breadth of West Bengal. Seminars have done by both honours and general students on the topics like- Motherhood, Death,  Human Body, Dream, Deviance, Food, Tourism, Gender & Sexuality etc.

Archaeological anthropology– seminars on recent published works in Prehistoric archaeology. Field visit to experience excavation, study topographical map, tool collection, temple study as well as museum visit for dipper understanding of primate evolution process.

Students regularly publish wall magazine on Teacher’s day.

Department also arranges seminars on regular basis by inviting eminent academicians and scientists.

Regular Students Seminars are held in the department as a part of the syllabus of both
Honours and General courses. There was a departmemtal students’seminar by the 3rd yr
honours students on 16.09.2019. The seminar was on Archaeology.
A project was also conducted by the 1st semester hons. students during the month of
September , 2019 on some basic methodologies of social field work,.
Field Works, both camp type and local , are a regular feature of this department as field
work is included in all the individual courses of this department. In last session (i.e. 2019 –
2020 ) , the field works which the department conducted are :- IIIYr Hons. Field Work
Social Anthropology) at Pakhiralaya, Sunderban. Duration:-

Teachers’ Day was celebrated with much galore as usual like each year. It was coupled with
Freshers” Welcome and Farewell Programme for the outgoing students of the Department. It
was celebrated on 05.09.2019.
A cultural competition on songs, dance and recitation was conducted by the Department as
instructed by the Cultural Subcommittee. The results were also declared. There was
supposed to be an inter-departmental competition which did not take place at that time.
The Department helds regular parent teachers meeting specially before each camp type field
work (both Honours. and General ) informing every details including the financial part to the
guardians.
Last year , the III yr Gen. field work had to be postponed due to some unprecedented political
agitation. At that time of crisis also, the department along with the Principal arranged an
emergent parent teachers meeting explaining them the reason for postponing the field . It was
later conducted in February’20.
An alumni seminar by our ex-student student, Dr. Swarup Dutta, Deptt. Of Policy Studies,
Teri University, was organised on 2nd Mar 2020

Achievements

Many students of this department have cleared state as well as national competitive examinations such as NET, SLET / SET, GATE, Civil services, Defence services etc. throughout the years.  In the last 7 years:-

  • 14 students have obtained placement in various Govt. Colleges through the Public Service Commission, West Bengal.
  • 1 student has been appointed as Assistant Professor in Anthropology in Calcutta University and 1 has been appointed in Shillong University.
  • 10 students have cleared West Bengal Civil Services.
  • 15 students have cleared UGC NET-JRF examinations.
  • 25 students have cleared UGC NET- Lectureship examinations.

More than 40 % of students are absorbed in various NGOs.
