About the Department

Department of Mathematics, Narasinha Dutt College came into existence since the inception of the college in 1924. Department offers courses at Undergraduate (UG) and Post Graduate (PG) levels. It runs 3-year B.Sc. (Honours & General) courses in Mathematics and 2-year Post B.Sc. course leading to the degree of M.Sc. in Applied Mathematics (Self-Financing) affiliated to University of Calcutta. Both UG and PG sections are under Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) from academic session 2018-19. College authority initiated M.Sc. course in Mathematics in the academic session 2010-2011 on recommendations of NAAC PEER Team visited for the first cycle assessment in the year 2007. Right from its inception, the department has striven to set high standards of teaching. The department has regular faculty with diversified expertise, for example, Functional analysis, Operator Theory, Topology, Algebraic Topology, Quantum Field Theory, Operations Research, Optimization, Algebra, and Complex Analysis. Along with regular faculties, many highly qualified and experienced guest faculties from other colleges, Universities and National Institutes have been rendering their valuable service to this Post-Graduate section in Mathematics. Department organises Departmental and National Seminars in different field of Mathematicson a regular basis by inviting eminent Professors and Experts from reputed Institutions. M.Sc. pass out students from Mathematics Department are already well placed in different reputed institutions/ companies and some of them are pursuing further studies for achieving their research degrees.

  • Library:One Departmental Seminar Library with 453 books which are regularly issued to the students for upliftment of their knowledge and cope up with the regular curriculum.
  • Internet facilities for Staff & Students:One desktop with internet facilities and printer available in the department. Faculties, students and staff members have access to Internet Facility in the Department for gathering knowledge related to the recent progresses.
  • Class rooms with ICT facility:One Laptop, one projector and one smart board are present in the ICT classroom of the Department with which the faculties give power-point presentation to the students and the students also use it for giving their seminars in the Department.
  • Laboratories:Students Lab-2 (Practical classes for the students are conducted here)Research Lab (Microscope with attached camera, set up for DNA isolation and gel electrophoresis and other instruments are available for research activities).
  • Parents –Teacher meeting :
    1. Parent eachers Meeting was held at the Department of Zoology for Sem 1 and Sem 2 students on 13.11.2019
    2. Teacher’s Day celebration Teacher’s Day celebrated by the students at the Department of Zoology on 5.09.2019. Both the teachers and the students celebrated the day with a cultural programme at the Department.
    3.  Participation in Institutional Social Responsibility (ISR): Students, Faculties and NTS of the Department of Zoology are regularly involved in Institutional Social Responsibility such as tree plantation, cleaning and restoration of water bodies, hygiene maintenance, awareness campaigns, environmental service through Nature Club/Eco Club etc.

1.An One day International invited lecture was organised jointly by the Department of Zoology and the IQAC of the college on 30.09.2019. Topic was “ Biology and Genomics for Cancer Therapy”. The speakers were Dr. Santasree Banerjee (BGI-SHENZHEN-CHINA) and Sri Krishnendu Ghosh(Research Scholar, University of Calcutta)

2.Excursion to Alipore Zoo was held on 20.01.2020 with the 3rd year Zoology Hons The students were guided by three teachers, Dr. Mohua Guha, Dr. Shampa Sarkar and Dr. Anirban Sinha. Sri Dibyendu Pakhira joined the team as Laboratory assistant. A group photo was taken in front of the animal house at the Zoo on that day.

3.Excursion to Ramkrishna Mission, Narendrapur was held on 11.02.2020 with the 3rd year Zoology General students. The students visited the Dairy farm, Poultry Farm, Mushroom cultivation centre there. The students were accompanied by the departmental teachers Prof. Subrata Kr. Basu, Dr. Shukla Mukherjee, Dr. Shampa Sarkar, Dr. Mohua Guha, Dr. Sutirtha Sarkar.

4.Visit to 8th International Poultry Fair in Kolkata was held on 13.02.2020 with the 3rd year Zoology Hons students and SEM 2.

  • At least more than 60% of the students who pass out get admission to PG course every year
  • In 2016, 19 students got 1st class out of 22 i.e., 86.3% students got 1st class in Part III Examination of Calcutta University.
