About the Department

Department of Mathematics, Narasinha Dutt College came into existence since the inception of the college in 1924. Department offers courses at Undergraduate (UG) and Post Graduate (PG) levels. It runs 3-year B.Sc. (Honours & General) courses in Mathematics and 2-year Post B.Sc. course leading to the degree of M.Sc. in Applied Mathematics (Self-Financing) affiliated to University of Calcutta. Both UG and PG sections are under Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) from academic session 2018-19. College authority initiated M.Sc. course in Mathematics in the academic session 2010-2011 on recommendations of NAAC PEER Team visited for the first cycle assessment in the year 2007. Right from its inception, the department has striven to set high standards of teaching. The department has regular faculty with diversified expertise, for example, Functional analysis, Operator Theory, Topology, Algebraic Topology, Quantum Field Theory, Operations Research, Optimization, Algebra, and Complex Analysis. Along with regular faculties, many highly qualified and experienced guest faculties from other colleges, Universities and National Institutes have been rendering their valuable service to this Post-Graduate section in Mathematics. Department organises Departmental and National Seminars in different field of Mathematicson a regular basis by inviting eminent Professors and Experts from reputed Institutions. M.Sc. pass out students from Mathematics Department are already well placed in different reputed institutions/ companies and some of them are pursuing further studies for achieving their research degrees.

Courses Offered

The Department of Mathematics provides a comprehensive range of undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) programs, thoughtfully structured under the latest academic frameworks to suit different student needs. Undergraduate Programs (Under CCF) For our undergrad students, we’ve broken down our offerings into a few clear paths under the new Curriculum and Credit Framework: Mathematics Major: If math is your main focus, we run a four-year (eight-semester) Honours program. You can also take this up as an Honours with Research course. Multidisciplinary Course (MDC): We have a standard three-year (six-semester) program where you can study math alongside other subjects. Mathematics Minor: Let’s say you are doing your four-year Honours major in Physics, Chemistry, or Computer Science. You can easily pick up our math courses as your minor. Interdisciplinary Course (IDC): Even if math isn’t your major or minor at all, you aren’t left out. We offer a specific IDC paper meant for students from other departments who want to build their math skills. Postgraduate Programs (Under CBCS) Moving over to our master’s students, everything is structured around the Choice Based Credit System: M.Sc. in Applied Mathematics: This is our core postgraduate degree, focusing heavily on how math actually applies to real-world problems. CBCC Papers: To keep the curriculum interesting, we include Choice Based Credit Courses. Currently, students can take up papers like Statistical Methods and the Fundamentals of Atmospheric Sciences. Advanced Specializations: For those leaning toward research, we offer specialized advanced papers. Here, you can dive deep into complex topics like Fluid Dynamics, Nonlinear Dynamics, and Plasma Physics.
