About the Department
Established in 1924 with the college, this Department has a distinguished legacy, shaped by stalwarts like Mrs. Mita Mukherjee. Over time, it expanded to include M.A. programs, fostering excellence in Shakespearean Studies, Elizabethan Studies, Popular Culture Studies and Literary Theory. The faculty boasts accomplished literary critics, including an ex Judge of the Sahitya Akademi specializing in comparative theology, emphasizing interdisciplinary research. Traditionally, students pursued government services, but today, they excel in HR, law, and in the corporate sector. The Department’s guest faculty, all NET-qualified, bring diverse perspectives to literary studies. Committed to intellectual rigor, the Department’s core mission remains to cultivate an appreciation for the richness of the humanities. Current faculty members have also taught at various other PG Departments and Universities as guest faculty. One delivered the distinguished de Nobili Endowment Lecture in Philosophy in 2022. Faculty members have been resource persons at various academic events.
PG course started with 30 students and 5full time teachers on 2013. The Department is now housed on the third floor of West Block. A Departmental Library for PG and Seminar Library for UG are also maintained. Now the department has 1 Desktop, 1 Laptop, and Class-rooms with ICT facilities and Wi-Fi Internet connections. There is an Aquaguard and a Bluestar Cooler for students. The Department is equipped with Fully air conditioned PG class rooms, staff room and Library room. Regular seminar lectures by teachers of other Universities and Colleges are organised. Students’ Seminars are also organised.
A Placement cell to promote and review job opportunities for students has been initiated.
The Department of English has been a part of the college since the time of its foundation. The Department of English has two sections – Undergraduate and Postgraduate (self financing). There is a well equipped Seminar Library for both UG and PG students in the Department. Regular Tests are taken to ensure proper progress of the students. Students’ Feedback is also regularly taken. Students take part in NSS and Sports activities too. The number of students who appeared in UG (SEM III) and were successful is- 89 hons ; 108 gen. For PG the numbers are SEM I – 15; SEM III – 22. The Department has organized Students’ Seminar, Teachers’ Day, and Seminar Lectures in the past year.
