About the Department
The Department of Political Science at Narasinha Dutt College, Howrah, West Bengal, is one of the oldest departments in this premier institution, established in 1924 as the oldest college in Howrah district and affiliated with the University of Calcutta. From its inception, the department has been integral to the college’s Arts faculty, offering B.A. programmes in Political Science Honours and General courses, contributing significantly to student education in political theory, governance, international relations, and Indian politics.
Over the decades, the department has grown steadily, adapting to curriculum changes under Calcutta University while maintaining a focus on academic excellence and holistic student development. It has produced generations of graduates who have excelled in diverse fields, including academia, civil services, law, and public administration.
Among its distinguished former faculty, Rajkumar Ganguly, a long-serving Associate Professor and former Head of the Department, retired in 2024 after years of dedicated teaching and leadership.
