About the Department

The Department of Philosophy is one of the oldest and prestigious department of this college. Initially starting with a few students it has grown to a department of repute. Several eminent Teachers have enriched the department with their wisdom and dedication, amongst whom the names of Late Prof Haripada Bharati, Late Prof Sanjib Ghosh, Prof Dulal Pandey and Prof Phalguni Mukherjee deserve special mention. The department has organized several seminars approved by UGC ,ICPR over the years. A special features of this department is its own well equipped seminar library comprising about more than 200 no of Books on different sub areas of the subjects. The students of this departments belong to both the genders and are mostly from semi urban and rural areas. They have excelled in their respective fields of work after completing graduation from this college and have contributed in different areas of social living.

Seminar / Workshops [For last 3 Years]

1. A Special Lecture on ‘Philosophy of Peace and Conflict Resolution’ was organised by the Department on 19/12/2023 in observance of World Philosophy Day. Dr. Varbi Roy, Associate Professor in Philosophy, Scottish Church College was the speaker.
2. One day Periodic Lecture on ‘Critical Thinking and Philosophizing’ Sponsored by Indian Council of Philosophical Research was held on 20/01/2024. Dr. Pralayankar Bhattacharya, Associate Professor, University of Calcutta and Dr. Dipayan Pattanayak, Professor, Jadavpur University were the speakers.
3. A Special Lecture on ‘Environmental Concerns and Issues enshrined in Indian Philosophy’ was organised by the Department in observance of World Philosophy Day on 04/12/2024. Dr. Lalita Agrwal, Associate Professor in Philosophy, Gokhale Memorial Girl’ College was the speaker.
4. A Special Lecture on ‘Care Ethics’ was held on 28/11/2025 in observance of World Philosophy Day. Dr. Daliya Ray, Associate Professor in Philosophy, Shibpur Dinobundhoo Institution (College) was the speaker.

1. UGC Sponsored State Level Seminar on 25^th March 2008

2. Student Seminars on 16^th Jan urary 201`5 and 22^nd December 2015.

3. Study Tour on 19^th February 2015

4. The Department of Philosophy organized a Parent Teacher meeting with 1st Sem & 3rd Sem students on 30.09.2019.

5. The Department celebrate World Philosophy Day on 4th December in 2019 , Professor Subir Ranjan Bhattacharya of university of Calcutta and professor Jhuma Chakraborty of Jadavpur University addressed the audience.

Departmental Activities [For last 3 years]

1. Departmental Centenary celebration entitled ‘Shotoborsher aloke golpe kothai Darshan’ (শতবর্ষের আলোকে গল্পে কথায় দর্শন) was organised by the Department as a part of the Centenary Celebration of the establishment of the college on 20th September 2023.
2. Teacher’ Day celebration was organised by the students of the Department on 5th September 2023.
3. The Study Tour was organised on 17th January 2024 which included a visit to Pareshnath Jain Temple, Rabindranath Tagore’s ancestral home in Jorasanko & Swami Vivekananda’s home.
4. An outreach activity entitled ‘In search of mindful activity’ was organised by the department for NSS on 27th march 2024.
5. Summer Internship Programme was completed by the semester II Philosophy Major students at Don Bosco Ashayalayam, on Social Work from 16th June to 30th June 2024.
6. Farewell Programme for semester VI pass out students was organised on 25.11.2024.
7. A parent teacher meeting of Philosophy Major students was held 3rd December 2024
8. Departmental Students participated in NSS activities, in Tarasundari Balika Vidyalaya on 26th April 2025.
9. Summer Internship of Semester II Philosophy Major Students was held from 15th May to 30th May 2025 at Don Bosco Ashayalayam, on Social Work.
10. A parent teacher meeting of Philosophy Major students was held 7th May 2025.
11. A Study tour was organised by the Department on 3/12/2025 which included visits to Raja Rammohan Roy Museum and Kolkata Police Museum.
