Year of establishment : 1924

Department of Botany, Narasinha Dutt College is one of the oldest  Botany Departments of West Bengal. The department has a glorious history of its growth and development ever since its inception. The Honours stream was established in 1985 under the leadership of the then principal Prof. Keshab Mukhopadhaya, Prof. (Dr.) Arun Kumar Sharma, Late Prof. Subhas Chandra Dutta and other plant scientists. Reputed teachers and botanists like Prof. Raj Kumar Sen, Prof. Mohini Mohan Chatterjee, Prof. Narayan Krishna Dhar, Prof. Srinibas Debnath, Prof. Probhat Dutta, Dr. Sona Sen, Dr. Animesh Ghorai, Dr. Ashalata D’Rozario were the faculties of the department. Late Sri Srimanta Pradhan, Late Sri Nemai Das, Late Sri Netai Pal were associated with this department as laboratory attendants.  The department has its own well equipped laboratories, herbarium, museum and seminar library.

Backbone of the department are the present teachers, namely  Dr. Aditi Saha (Head of the Department),Dr. Tandra Das Prof. Sanjib Kumar Saha,Dr. Pampa Chakraborty, Dr. Subhojit Bandopadhyay ,& also Tenzing Ngoden Bhutia, Sk Salek Sohel , Sri Asim Kumar Chaudhuri (SACT), Apurba Mahanti (SACT) with specialization in different fields of Plant Science (Cytogenetics, Microbiology, Palaeobotany, Myco-pathology, Taxonomy, Ecology, Instrumentation, etc.). There are a number of national and international publications by the faculty members of the Department.

 1. Teacher’s Day Celebration: Teacher’s day was celebrated by the students of the Department of Botany on 5th September, 2019.
Cultural programme were performed by the students on this occasion.
 2.Short- excursion: To acquainted with the local flora a field trip with 3rd Sem Hon’s student was organized on 23rd August, 2019 at N.D. College Campus and adjoining area under the guidance of Dr. A. Saha, Dr. S. Bandyopadhyay and Sri S. Saha.

3. Departmental re-union : organized every year since 1990.  24th annual reunion of the Department of Botany were held on 29th September, 2019. A good numbers of alumni and our ex teaches of the
department were present in this meet.

4. Science exhibition:  organized every year by honours students.

5. Wall Magazine ‘Camellia’: A wall magazine was also published from department of Botany, which was unveiled by our respected
principal Dr. S. Bandyopadhyay on 29th September,2019.

6. Parent-teachers’ Meet: organized every year since 2006, Parent-Teacher’s meeting was held on 29th February, Parents of 2nd and 4th Sem Hon’s students were shared and exchanged their views with the teachers of the department. Discussion regarding upcoming Botanical long excursion at Shilong and adjoining areas were also discussed in the said meeting

7. Students’ Seminar :  Like Every year, 4th Sem and 3rd Year Hon’s
students were participated in the Student’s Seminar organised by the department on 7th November, 2019.

8. Departmental Seminar: presented by Eminent Botanists (e.g., Prof. (Dr.) Nirmalendu Samajpati, Dr. Madhusudan Mandal, Prof. (Dr.) Timir Baran Jha, Dr. Animesh Ghorai and Prof. (Dr.) Gour Gopal Maity)

9. Teachers’ Day: celebrated by the students of the department every year.

10. Our medicinal plant garden: maintained by the department in the college campus.

11. A token prize to the highest scorers in Botany Honours Part II and Part III in memory of Late Professor Srinibas Debnath, presented  by his family members.: awarded every year.
