History of the College

July 1924, an aparently small, but potentially great thing happened in Howrah. A College affiliated to University of Calcutta came into being with just seven teachers and 124 students, in the residential building of Late I. R. Belilious. The initiative in this regard was taken by Late Suranjan Dutt, the second son of Late Narasinha Dutt. The College started with Motilal Chatterjee as Principal and a renowned scholar Jnanendranath Sen as Vice-Principal. Later on Prof. Sen became the Principal of the college and remained at the helm of affairs for a pretty long time to be reckoned with as the architect of the College. As a mark of respect to this dedicated educationalist, the Howrah Municipal Corporation has named East-West Road, a city thoroughfare in the vicinity of the college as 'Addhyakya Jnan Sen Sarani'.

With the passage of time the building spawned, the enrolment of students soared high and fourteen Honours courses were opened. At Present seventy eight full-time and thirty eight part-time/guest teachers teach more than five thousand students in the three sections (Morning, Day and Evening) of the college. The Morning section is exclusively for girls, the Evening Section is exclusively for boys and the Day section is Co-educational.
