The department was established in 1962. At that time it offered only Zoology general courses. From the year 1970 Zoology honours courses was introduced.
From then this department has been maintaining its glorious tradition of making the excellent results at the undergraduate examinations under the University of Calcutta. The Zoology department is also glorified by the students involved in various important professions.
The department is like a family where the teachers and students are involved in the teaching and learning process not only in the classroom but beyond that. The department maintains a peaceful and productive environment for both the faculty and the students.


  • At least more than 60% of the students who pass out get admission to PG course every year
  • In 2016, 19 students got 1st class out of 22 i.e., 86.3% students got 1st class in Part III Examination of Calcutta University.
  • In 2016, Tridev Sana obtained 81% and Shreoshi Bera Obtained 80% in CU Part I Examination.
  • As many as 6 students qualified for NET/SET in last 4 years.

  • Through its Nature Club/Eco Club arrange Bird Watching camp every year.
  • Interaction and special lectures by successful alumni students.
  • Library:One Departmental Seminar Library with 453 books which are regularly issued to the students for upliftment of their knowledge and cope up with the regular curriculum.
  • Internet facilities for Staff & Students:One desktop with internet facilities and printer available in the department. Faculties, students and staff members have access to Internet Facility in the Department for gathering knowledge related to the recent progresses.
  • Class rooms with ICT facility:One Laptop, one projector and one smart board are present in the ICT classroom of the Department with which the faculties give power-point presentation to the students and the students also use it for giving their seminars in the Department.
  • Laboratories:Students Lab-2 (Practical classes for the students are conducted here)Research Lab (Microscope with attached camera, set up for DNA isolation and gel electrophoresis and other instruments are available for research activities).
  • Parents –Teacher meeting helds every year at the Zoology Dept.
  • Participation in Institutional Social Responsibility (ISR): Students, Faculties and NTS of the Department of Zoology are regularly involved in Institutional Social Responsibility such as tree plantation, cleaning and restoration of water bodies, hygiene maintenance, awareness campaigns, environmental service through Nature Club/Eco Club etc.
