History of the College

About The College

July 1924, an apparently small event, due to assume much larger proportions. A college affiliated to the University of Calcutta started with just seven teachers and 124 students in the residential building of Late I.R. Belilious.The initiative in this regard was taken by Late Suranjan Dutta, the second son of Late Narasinha Dutta .The College started with Motilal Chatterjee as Principal and renowned scholar Jnanendranath Sen as Vice-Principal. Later on Prof. Sen became the Principal and remained in office for a long time to play the role of the architect of the college.

With the passage of time, new building came to be erected, enrolment of students steadily picked up and fourteen honours courses were opened. The Morning Shift is exclusively for girls, the Evening Shift exclusively for boys and the Day Shift is Co-educational.

Objectives

As our mission breeds and fosters our vision, so are our objectives aim to turn our vision into reality.

These objectives include:

  • To introduce new courses at the under-graduate level in modern/non-conventional subjects;
  • To introduce post-graduate courses in Arts/Science/Commerce in near future;
  • To introduce vocational/job oriented courses and training programs;
  • To use teaching aids/ innovative devices in order to make the teaching-learning process more attractive to the new generation of learners;
  • To introduce research activities in various departments;
  • To streamline and integrate the three sections of the college in such a way that the available infrastructure can be best utilized;
  • To enhance the present infrastructural facilities to expand and upgrade the quality of teaching.
